What is Non-trucking liability (NTL)?

Non-trucking liability is coverage for a leased owner-operator's liability while driving the truck for personal use, when it is not hauling for or under dispatch by the motor carrier.

The motor carrier's policy usually covers the truck while it is working under the lease. The lease must say who provides insurance, under 49 CFR 376.12(j).

Policy wording varies by insurer, so the exact trigger is in each policy's endorsement.
