Michigan troopers and motor carrier officers made 104 stops on Wayne County freeways

What it means for small fleets

FOX 2 Detroit reports Michigan State Police made 104 stops on Wayne County freeways on Oct. 20, and MSP says similar operations will follow.

What happened

Michigan State Police troopers and motor carrier officers worked I-75, I-96 and I-275 in Wayne County from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 20. They made 104 stops, wrote 62 tickets and gave 44 verbal warnings. Violations included 16 for speeding, 12 hands-free and 4 for following too closely, and the top speed was 98 mph.

Why it matters

MSP says drivers will see similar operations focused on speeding, distracted driving and following too closely. In Michigan, holding or manually using a phone while driving is a primary offense, and civil fines double if the at-fault driver in a crash was using one.

What to consider

Remind drivers that Michigan allows no more than a single touch on a phone, even a mounted one, and that this applies while stopped in traffic. Michigan distracted driving rules · Michigan trucking insurance guide
