Indiana lawmaker backs a crackdown on chameleon trucking companies
The Indiana Capital Chronicle reports House transportation chair Jim Pressel wants Indiana's business registry linked with the Department of Revenue, the BMV and state police to spot chameleon carriers.
What happened
At a Statehouse news conference on Oct. 20, House Roads and Transportation Committee Chair Jim Pressel joined secretary of state candidate Max Engling to back a crackdown on chameleon carriers, companies that shut down and register again under new names when they face safety investigations. The Indiana Capital Chronicle reports Pressel wants the secretary of state's business registry linked with the Department of Revenue, the BMV and the state police, and may seek to require a physical operation in Indiana rather than only a mailing address.
Why it matters
Pressel described ideas, not a bill, and the issue is a lead talking point in Engling's campaign for secretary of state. Pressel wrote the law passed earlier this year that set felonies and fines for improperly credentialed truck drivers, and he says Indiana has no way to identify chameleon carriers now.
