Indianapolis police tell truckers to route around a 12-foot-4 rail bridge downtown

What it means for small fleets

WRTV reports Indianapolis police said trucks keep striking or stalling under the 12-foot, 4-inch rail bridge near 300 S. Meridian St.

What happened

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says officers keep responding to backups caused by trucks that strike or stall under the railroad bridge near 300 S. Meridian St., which has a 12-foot, 4-inch clearance. WRTV reports IMPD is directing carriers and drivers to use truck-specific navigation that flags low clearances, weight limits and approved freight routes.

Why it matters

A bridge strike can damage the truck, the load and the bridge, and police say these stops also pull officers away from other downtown work. IMPD listed detours using Washington Street to West Street, Maryland Street to South Pennsylvania or South East Street, and South Street.

What to consider

Make sure drivers going into downtown Indianapolis use truck routing with your trailer height set, and share the IMPD detours with dispatch. Indiana DOR oversize and overweight permits · Indiana intrastate trucking requirements
