Great Dane and Wabash recall 2027 van trailers over landing gear and wheel defects
NHTSA says Great Dane is recalling 6,810 model-year 2027 van trailers because landing gear welds may fail, and Wabash is recalling 475 model-year 2027 van trailers because the wrong wheel bearing lubricant may cause wheel lock-up.
What happened
Great Dane is recalling 6,810 model-year 2027 Champion and Everest van trailers because the landing gear k-brace welds may fail and the landing gear may collapse, according to NHTSA recall 26V708. A separate Great Dane recall, 26E074, covers 840 landing gear assemblies with part number A30300240001 for the same defect. Wabash is recalling 475 model-year 2027 van trailers because incorrect wheel bearing lubricant may cause the wheel end to seize and lock up, according to NHTSA recall 26V683.
Why it matters
NHTSA says a collapsing landing gear increases the risk of injury, and wheel lock-up can cause a loss of handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash. Great Dane will inspect and replace the k-brace as needed at no charge, with owner letters expected Dec. 22 for trailers and Dec. 18 for assemblies. Wabash dealers will inspect and replace the lubricant at no charge, with owner letters expected Nov. 25. Land Line reports about 10% of the Great Dane recall population is estimated to have the defect. No injuries have been reported for either recall.
