Truck insurance pricing splits between safer and weaker fleets, insurance broker says
Insurance Business reports a national insurance broker said fleets with strong safety records are seeing flat pricing or about 5% increases, while weaker accounts face increases of 30% to 40%.
What happened
Trucking fleets with strong safety records are seeing flat pricing or increases of about 5%, while weaker accounts face increases of 30% to 40% and fewer willing insurers, a national insurance broker told Insurance Business. The broker said several trucking and commercial auto insurers he met at recent WSIA meetings put the underlying trend for their books at about 8.5% to 9%.
Why it matters
The broker said insurers look at whether money pressure shows up as aging equipment, deferred maintenance, less driver training and rising out-of-service violations. He said insurers also watch for late claims reporting, and he urged reporting to the insurer the same day, even with incomplete details. The article cites ATRI research finding trucking liability premiums per mile rose 18.6% from 2021 to 2024.
What to consider
Keep maintenance and driver training records current, watch your out-of-service rates in FMCSA's SMS, and set a rule that every crash gets reported to your insurer the same day. CSA basics for small fleets · FMCSA SMS lookup
